McWay Falls. Big Sur, California.
May 2013.
A 400-meter walk from the parking lot, which is directly off Highway 1, McWay Falls is the iconic scene of Big Sur. The entire park area was donated by the family who made their home on the cliff above the cove in the early 1900s (the house was destroyed, but the foundations remain). The beach is inaccessible except from the ocean, and visitors are charged a high fee to be rescued from the cliffs—which is probably for the best, since the cove would be overrun by eager beach-goers.
